With the recent tragic events in December 2006 with the Kim Family from San Francisco, we encourage caution when driving in Oregon, and when choosing your routes. We strongly urge you to stay on the main roads. Oregon is a naturally beautiful state to visit,
but if you are not familiar with the area, PLEASE use the main roads. Our state highways are maintained well, but there are many roads in this state that noone has any business driving on. Such as logging and forest service roads that wander in mazes throughout the national forests. They are meant for seasoned veterans, not for
last minute adventures.
The Kims chose Bear Camp Road as a short cut between Grants Pass and Gold Beach, and 3 out of 4 of them lived to regret it. The Siskiyou Mountains in winter claimed their father. In Southern Oregon, please use Hwy 199 from Grants Pass to the Coast (Crescent City, Brookings, & Gold Beach), or Hwy's 42 or 38 from Roseburg area. Like the Pacific Ocean, our Mountains
demand respect. Even in the middle of summer it can snow without warning in our mountains. Sneaker waves on our beaches can surprise you and take you out to sea the minute your back is turned. Respect nature and the wilderness. Travel wisely. Stock your car with emergency supplies, food, water, warm clothing, hats & gloves, and tire chains in winter, especially when driving through our mountains or across our huge high desert area in the eastern half of the state. Thank you.
